TKWA UrbanLab was formed by The Kubala Washatko Architects, Inc. as an extension of their Cedarburg-based studio office. The goal of UrbanLab is to help lead on going community efforts in making downtown Milwaukee and its adjacent neighborhoods a more vibrant urban center. Creating a physical presence in the City allows TKWA to provide an active voice in shaping the future of Milwaukee at a time of dynamic change and growth in the downtown.
The TKWA UrbanLab creative space is housed within a modest, yet highly visible and accessible, storefront within the larger redevelopment of an existing industrial warehouse located on South Fifth Street in Milwaukee. TKWA worked with the project owner to create an overall master plan for the building, which was envisioned as a vibrant, mixed-use maker space, restaurant, and office development. A former enclosed loading dock area was exposed to create an open-air restaurant courtyard while retaining the original metal roof trusses. New storefront window and door openings were created for the TKWA UrbanLab creative space. Additional tenants include a production, distribution, and retail space for an organic juice maker, as well as production and office space for a regional malting company serving the craft brewing industry.
