Program: Adaptive reuse of existing historic building into a holistic fitness center, with a focus on creative and cost-efficient interior design techniques
River Shores YMCA
Completed in 2005, this new contemporary holistic fitness/wellness center was designed as part of a much larger adaptive re-use of an existing industrial facility located along the Milwaukee River. The original building’s exposed structure and limited daylighting initially posed a challenge, as these elements competed with the calm, serene atmosphere that the client had in mind. Additionally, budget was a major factor, so finish effects had to be carefully selected for impact.
Elements chosen to counteract these challenges include cloudlike fabric forms stretched across the ceiling to dampen sound and conceal industrial fixtures; carefully chosen paint colors; and the introduction of natural, earthy features such as a slate tiled floor and a water feature in the reception area.
