Chippewa Nature Center
Midland, MI
One of the largest and most prominent private, non-profit facilities of its type in the United States, Chippewa Nature Center is situated on over 1,200 wooded, riverfront acres in Midland, Michigan.

TKWA has been asked to assist Chippewa Nature Center in developing a facility renovation and expansion plan that accomodates additional childhood education capacity, as well as an expansion and reconfiguration of existing office space. TKWA will also work closely with the Chippewa staff to incorporate interpretive planning goals into the building design.

Underlying this entire project is the Chippewa Nature Center’s institutional goal of making the Visitor Center an environmentally-sustainable structure that echoes their message of stewardship. This means not just building a structure in the woods next to the river with four walls and a roof, but incorporating passive solar energy (including photovoltaic panels to harvest energy from the sun) and natural ventilation, and using quality insulating materials.
