Schlitz Audubon Nature Center Pavilion
Bayside, WI
When the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center decided to construct their new 39,000 square foot LEED® Gold certified facility, the organization faced a decision about what to do with their original 1970’s facility, which had deteriorated beyond repair.

A new trailhead pavilion was designed on the site of the old building, facing an open sun-filled courtyard in the woods. Site-harvested black locust columns and recycled timber beams form the pavilion structure. The outdoor deck from the original building was left intact and resurfaced, and a traditional soldered-seam copper roof was added to provide a soft, weathered patina.

Situated on a high bluff overlooking Lake Michigan, the Schlitz Audubon pavilion has become a popular year-round destination for the Nature Center’s educational programming and public receptions, as well as a destination for quiet contemplation by trail hikers making their way through this 185-acre wooded preserve.
