River Shores YMCA
West Bend, WI
Completed in 2005, this new contemporary holistic fitness/wellness center was designed as part of a much larger adaptive re-use of an existing industrial facility located along the Milwaukee River. The original building’s exposed structure and limited daylighting initially posed a challenge, as these elements competed with the calm, serene atmosphere that the client had in mind. Additionally, budget was a major factor, so finish effects had to be carefully selected for impact.

Elements chosen to counteract these challenges include cloudlike fabric forms stretched across the ceiling, which inexpensively dampen sound and conceal industrial fixtures; carefully chosen paint colors, which are a cost effective way to transform a space; and the introduction of natural, earthy features such as a slate tiled floor and a water feature in the reception area. Additionally, many inexpensive non-traditional materials were repurposed for this project, including translucent corrugated panels - usually used in greenhouses - which were backlit and used for partitions and the reception desk. The end effect transcends its limited budget to offer guests a serene and luxurious spa experience.
