The Hilldale Center has evolved over forty years from a department store-anchored open center to the enclosed mall we see today. From the beginning Hilldale has had a special relationship with its neighbors and the greater Madison community.
In Spring, 2004 Joseph Freed and Associates purchased Hilldale with the intent of improving the property through stabilization of its core retail operations, renovation of portions of the commercial structure, and construction of structures and spaces to accomodate new uses. The goal was to produce a mixed-use complex in an inviting environment with retail, commercial, and residential uses served by appropriate parking, access, and circulation facilities.
The Kubala Washatko Architects were hired to produce an initial conceptual master plan for this redevelopment project.
