Norskedalen Heritage Center Master Plan – Phase II
Norskedalen (‘Norwegian Valley’), is a diverse 400-acre nature and heritage center dedicated to preserving, interpreting and sharing the natural environment and cultural heritage of the area surrounding Coon Valley in southwest Wisconsin. Norskedalen includes over 6 miles of hiking trails winding through the scenic coulee (valley) along Poplar Creek. A popular outdoor wedding and social event venue, Norskedalen hosts large seasonal events attracting over a thousand people at a time.
The TKWA Phase II master plan provides a coherent vision of the Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center facilities and outdoor areas. Key plan outcomes include the following:
a) new entrance gateway and improved traffic circulation;
b) dynamic new visitor center hub, based on rural tobacco barn vernacular, offering improved exhibit and banquet facilities;
c) restored and expanded Gunderson Arboretum;
d) relocation and repair of existing historic pioneer structures;
e) new trail system and interpretive signage and pedestrian bridges;
f) reconfigured parking lot, with native prairie overflow lot and landscaping;
g) improvements to existing outdoor shelter facility, including upgraded commercial kitchen;
h) repurposed Thrune Education Center to expand residential on-site programming.
