Net-Zero Environmental Education Center
This innovative new environmental education center for a well-known private college prep school in Connecticut is being designed to LEED Platinum and “net-zero” energy standards. The goal is to establish this campus as a national leader in preparatory school environmental and natural science education. Project spaces within the new facility include classrooms, lab, greenhouse, visitor reception, auditorium, plus office and living space for fourteen students and two faculty advisors. Most students will live and study in the facility for a full school year.
The projected Energy Utilization Intensity (EUI) goal for the environmental center will be approximately 5-7 kwh/sf/yr, a figure significantly below typical building energy use. High efficiency lighting, super-insulated walls, geothermal to preconditioned air in lieu of air conditioning for selected areas, and daylighting strategies such as long southern and northern exposures, high windows, and light-colored interiors will help reduce overall building energy demand.
