Program: Sustainable new addition to historic church serving as regional arts center
Monroe Arts Center
The Monroe Arts Center is a community-based arts organization located in an 1869 Gothic Revival-style church listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The primary concerns of the expansion plan include the addition of gallery space, increased public gathering space for the existing first floor performance space, and improved handicapped accessibility. A contemporary new addition was designed with sensitivity to the historic character of the original.
The arts center addition features a variety of sustainable design features. A south facing orientation and indirect skylights provide abundant natural daylight that is balanced with solar control features for archival needs. A highly insulated building shell provides long-term energy efficiency. Internal temperature and humidity controls will be designed to meet the archival needs of collections display and storage.
