Program: Adaptive reuse of historic building into sustainable and interactive children's museum
Madison Childrens’ Museum
The new Madison Children’s Museum demonstrates creative, cost-effective problem solving applied to the conversion of an existing office building into a dynamic museum-based learning environment.
Prominently located on Madison’s Capitol Square, the renovated facility triples the space of the museum’s previous location, with an additional two floors for future expansion. New museum amenities that enhance the visitor experience include greatly expanded exhibit spaces, on-site parking, family bathrooms, and a colorful and inviting café.
The Children’s Museum features many sustainable design features, including a green roof playscape showcasing rainwater collection and photovoltaic panels. The green roof offers dramatic views to the Capitol and nearby Lake Mendota, creating a unique and inviting venue for family and school groups, and for private museum events.
