Program: Master plan for expansion of an existing urban park
The opportunity to expand and upgrade Wauwatosa’s Hart Park resulted from the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District’s (MMSD) need to control flooding along the Menomonee River. This new park configuration includes flood mitigation areas, while strengthening the downtown core of Wauwatosa by creating an attractive family destination and center for community events.
The expanded park provides a new amphitheater, a variety of day shelters, picnic areas, and public gathering spaces. Pedestrian paths and bike trails are marked by consistent identity elements, wayfinding signs, and improved landscaping. Outdoor playground areas for multiple age groups were developed, including a children’s play area with a splash park, a skate park, and athletic fields containing basketball courts, a softball field, and a soccer field. As part of the overall plan TKWA was asked to design several outdoor park shelters. These open-air pavilions feature glu-lam wood and concrete construction.
Work was completed in partnership with Schreiber/Anderson Associates.
