Historic Soldiers Home Chapel Receives Save America’s Treasures Grant

Soldier's Home Chapel, 2008

The historic Soldiers Home Chapel (see project page) and Chaplain’s Quarters located on the Clement V. Zablocki Veterans Administration Grounds in Milwaukee has been awarded a $245,000 grant from the federal Save America’s Treasures program. As part of ongoing restoration planning services for the Soldiers Home Foundation, TKWA was responsible for preparing the grant application, which was submitted in Fall 2010. Winners of this highly competitive award program were announced in Washington D.C. in February 2011.

The Soldiers Home Chapel is located within the National Soldiers Home Historical District, which is the birthplace of federal veteran care in America established by President Lincoln at the conclusion of the Civil War. Funds from the Save America’s Treasures program will support restoration of the historic 1889 Home Chapel and the Chaplain’s Quarters. The restored Chapel will be made available for veteran use for services, as well as historic displays, public ceremonies and events. The Chaplain’s Quarters will support Veteran Services and the Foundation offices.
